What is Conscious Sedation ?
The aim of conscious sedation is to make you feel totally relaxed and comfortable during your dental treatment. Minimising any discomfort or anxiety and maximising the success of your complex dental treatment. By following national guidelines and abiding by national standards we ensure this is carried out with safety as our top priority so rest assured you are in safe hands.

Conscious sedation is achieved with agents (e.g. benzodiazepines, opiates, other sedative/anaesthetics and nitrous oxide gas with oxygen).

Administration of the sedatives and analgesia results in you becoming drowsy and sleepy, pain free, and probably amnesic such that you will have very little recollection of the procedure. Communication is possible if necessary during the operation because even though you are completely relaxed and unconcerned, you are not completely unconscious at any point in time.

Your vital signs (i.e. blood pressure, breathing, pulse rate, etc) are monitored throughout the procedure to ensure your safety, and a sedationist will stay with you all the time.
Recovery after sedation is much faster than with general anaesthesia. The same applies for the side effect profile (e.g. nausea and vomiting, headaches, muscle pains, sore throats) which is much less than with general anaesthesia - in fact, very few patients experience any side effects at all.
How does Conscious Sedation differ from a General Anaesthetic?
With conscious sedation you will always be able to breathe, cough, move and swallow. These reflexes stay intact, and we monitor you very closely to avoid you falling into a deep sedation.
On the other hand a General Anaesthetic (GA) can only be administered in a hospital setting. Here you would be completely unconscious, paralysed and intubated. Full theatre staff and anaesthetic staff are required for a GA.
Am I a candidate for Conscious Sedation?
Conscious Sedation is suitable for both Adults and Children that are affected by any of the below factors :
1
Fear of dental treatment or Dental Phobia including Specific phobias e.g- General dental, needle, drill etc
2
Fear of Panic Attacks/Choking
3
Having Implant/Prolonged surgical treatment/Endodontic treatment (Root Canal Treatment) and/or have Complex dental problems that require long unpleasant procedures

4
Sensitive Gag Reflex
5
Have special needs and / or sensory impairments
6
Have a medical problem which is exacerbated by the stress of dental treatment thus increasing the chance of an acute episode e.g acute asthma, angina etc
